About

The Balboa Brush Up is a weekend workshop, focusing on improving the basic technique, forms and quality of movement within our Balboa.
The workshop is being taught by the fabulous Mel & Jo Calanglang, alongside the fantastic Christi Rankin and Jean Harper.

Students will get 8 hours of classes over the 2 days, and each level will spend an equal amount with both sets of teachers.

Not only that, but there will also be two evening dances with the best Edinburgh DJs on the decks, and the weekend being rounded off on Sunday with a Tea Dance.

About Caledonian Balboa

Caledonia Balboa is made up of dancers from Fife, Edinburgh and Glasgow who wanted to set up a group with a focus on providing extra opportunities to help grow our local Balboa scenes. Since 2012 we have been organising events designed to complement the teaching and dancing already offered by our local scenes and to practise and develop the dance we love by inviting teachers and dancers from other dance scenes to come and dance with us at social events and workshops.

Our main aim is to ensure that there are even more Balboa social events or workshops close by to look forward to.

Class Levels

Improver

If you have some Balboa expereience but want to brush up on the fundamentals, then this class is for you.

We will focus on revising and refining technique: working on movements every Balboa dancer should be familiar with in pure Balboa and Bal-Swing and making these, your own movement and the connection with your partner even better - smoothing off any rough edges to give you greater confidence to just enjoy yourself in a social dance and to be ready to develop your dancing to the next level.

Intermediate +

For this level you should have a solid understanding of Balboa fundamentals and have been taking intermediate level or above Balboa classes on a regular basis for at least 6 months to a year.

You can lead/follow more complex movements and are comfortable adding in variations. You social dance regularly, as well as taking workshops at intermediate level or above at Balboa festivals.

We will work on developing your technique and repertoire, not simply by learning new moves, but by working in depth on ones you have become familiar with and exploring different ways of using them - making your leading and following even more successful, creative and finding ways to bring out the best in you and your partner.

It is not a requirement that you must sign up with a partner, however please be aware that we are keen to keep the classes as balanced as possible.

Therefore please note we may need to operate a waiting list (for both Leads and Follows) if oversubscribed, to try and preserve this balance.

After all, no-one likes to have to sit out too often in class.
